Cement tile making is an ancient decorative art form with roots in India and the Middle East. Artisans used wooden molds to create intricate designs for architectural décor, bringing beauty to walls, floors, and ceilings.
I specialize in breathing new life into these often-discarded wooden molds, each carrying its own unique history and purpose. My goal with each project is to showcase the inner beauty of the mold’s design.
envisioning the restored beauty
The process begins with imagining the original intent of the mold—was it meant for a floor, a wall, a ceiling, or perhaps another architectural element? I envision how the mold will look once it’s restored and consider whether it will be best displayed in a frame, as a tabletop piece, or in combination with other molds.
The restoration starts with the careful disassembly of the mold. I meticulously clean away the layers of dirt, grime, and cement residue, often transforming what was once an unrecognizable piece into a work of art. This manual process, which involves hours of hand cleaning, sanding, and polishing, allows the mold’s beauty to slowly emerge, much like the work of art and historical home restorers who uncover hidden treasures.
Once each piece of the wooden mold has been cleaned and sanded, I reassemble it using hardware that matches the original as closely as possible. Finally, the mold is ready for staining, finishing, and placement in a frame, where its historical beauty can be appreciated once again.
A Unique home decor
Restored wooden cement molds offer a distinctive decorative touch, transforming any living space into a showcase of history and artistry. Each mold, with its intricate design and rich past, becomes a unique focal point, blending ancient craftsmanship with modern interior design. Whether displayed as a framed piece, a tabletop accent, or integrated with other décor elements, these molds add depth and character to any room. Their timeless beauty and story of restoration make them not just decorative items, but meaningful enhancements that enrich the atmosphere of any home.
