This handcrafted full-sized desk, measuring 60 x 30 inches, is a striking fusion of artistry and function. Built from three planks—two of rich red gum flanking a central hickory board—it showcases the beauty of contrasting woods. The hickory’s natural cracks and crevices have been thoughtfully enhanced with russet-colored epoxy, adding depth and character. Expertly sanded to a fine, smooth surface and finished with multiple coats of premium Osmo Polyox oil-wax, the desk radiates both durability and elegance. Perfect for home offices or professional settings, it brings distinction and timeless appeal to any workspace.
The Story of this project
Previously, I had crafted a desk for myself using two planks of red gum paired with a striking piece of pecky cypress. The result was so rewarding—both visually and functionally—that I felt inspired to take on another project, this time experimenting with a different centerpiece. I made my way back to one of my favorite wood mills near Fredericksburg, Texas, where I carefully selected two beautifully grained red gum planks and a bold hickory slab for the middle section. The natural coloration and character of the hickory immediately suggested a pairing with a warm, reddish-brown epoxy, a choice that would not only fill its natural crevices but also create a rich contrast, accentuating the beauty of the surrounding red gum. This combination promised a desk that was not just functional, but a true expression of handcrafted design and material harmony.

Where to Use
This desk makes a statement of both beauty and utility, blending handcrafted artistry with everyday function. As an office desk in a home study or a professional workplace, it offers a surface that is not only distinctive but also inspiring each time you sit down to work. Its rich red gum and hickory composition, accented with russet epoxy adds character and sophistication—transforming any office into a space of distinction, warmth, and timeless appeal.
The Process
The creation of this desk began with carefully cutting each plank to size, followed by a thoughtful decision on which sides to feature in order to achieve the most striking balance of color, grain, and flow. Once selected, the surfaces were jointed, planed, and sanded smooth. The three planks—two red gum and one hickory—were then glued and joined together, before being planed and sanded once more for a seamless surface. To highlight the hickory’s natural character, the underside was sealed and russet-colored epoxy poured into its open pores. After curing, the excess epoxy was sanded away, revealing a flat, polished surface. For the finish, two coats of Osmo Polyx Oil were applied to enrich and protect the wood, followed by a layer of hard wax that was buffed to an even, elegant sheen. The result is a desk that embodies both craftsmanship and natural beauty..
