The Story of this project
This upscale desk represents the next evolution of my woodworking journey. After creating my first full-sized office desk for myself using red gum and pecky cypress, I was inspired to apply my growing experience with live-edge wood and epoxy river design to craft something even more ambitious. The project began with a remarkable walnut slab sourced from Urban Tree Company just north of San Antonio. Its rich color variations and flowing grain patterns immediately stood out, offering the perfect foundation for my first large-scale epoxy river desk. The result is a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind piece that blends natural beauty with artisan skill, designed to bring distinction, function, and inspiration to any office environment.

The Process
The process of handcrafting this epoxy river desk began with a premium live-edge walnut slab, which was carefully split down the middle. Each half was then cut and squared to the proper length, ensuring clean, balanced proportions. Using a router, both pieces were planed down evenly to a thickness of two inches, creating a uniform foundation for the build.
The two live-edge sides were then placed on a worktable, positioned to face one another with a natural void between them. To prepare for the epoxy pour, a temporary outer frame measuring 60 by 30 inches was constructed around the slabs to hold everything securely in place. Into this space, a shimmering blue-silver epoxy was poured, filling the gap and left to cure slowly over the course of a week.
Once the epoxy had fully hardened, the frame was removed and the desk’s surfaces—top, bottom, and sides—were sanded smooth to eliminate excess resin and refine the finish. The walnut was first treated with a penetrating coat of tung oil to enrich the wood’s natural grain and depth. Two coats of Osmo Poly-Ox were then applied to provide long-lasting protection and luster. Finally, the entire surface, including both the wood and epoxy, was fine-polished and buffed to a rich, even shine.
The result is a handcrafted desk that unites the timeless warmth of walnut with the contemporary elegance of an epoxy river, delivering both functionality and artistry in a one-of-a-kind piece.
