This maple side table has amazing spelting throughout that imparts a unique beauty to the wood. The spelting pattern is prominent on the top and side surfaces of the table.

The Story of this project

On a trip south to one of my favorite sawmills in the Texas Hill Country near Fredericksburg TX I found a long plank of spelted Maple wood. I didn’t know what I was going to do with it, but I knew the wood was absolutely beautiful and unique.
With just a limited amount of wood to work with, I opted to create this distinctive side table.

Where to Use

This table makes a statement of both beauty and utility. Placed along side a wall, it provides a surface for vases, plants or other small decorative items. . At 36 inch in height the side table hugs the walls of a room without disturbing the flow of movement. The spelted Maple wood provides a truly remarkable appearance that works well with almost any color of walls, chairs, sofas, rugs and wall decor.
A room with lots of natural light will make the piece stand out even more.

The Process

The project started by carefully planning on how to use every available square inch of the maple wood plank. Once the plans were made, the wood was cut to size and sanded to a fine finish.
The table was then assembled using dowels and glue.

I choose to use two coats of tung oil for the finish. A hard wax was then applied to the top surface and buffed to an even sheen.
