This thick live-edge cross-section side or accent table has a beautiful ring structure and spelting pattern. The table was finished with tung oil and then with a satin polyurethane coat to provide a protective layer.

The Story of this project

On a trip to the Berdoll sawmill around an hour east of Austin, TX I found this cross section piece of pecan wood that I knew would make a wonderful side or accent table. I could see though that the ring structure and color weredistinctive.

Where to Use

This accent table really stands out because of it’s beautiful circular ring structure and the 3 inch thickness of the slab. Whether used as an accent table in an office, living room, or porch, it provide a surface that can become a focal point of a room. At 25 inches in diameter and 3 inches in thicknesss the table provides ample surface area for a potted plant, decor or simply a side table for drinks. The natural color of the wood goes well with almost any color of walls, chairs, sofas, rugs and wall decor.

The Process

The project started by removing all loose bark from the outer edge of the wood. I then carefully smoothed the live edge surface with sandpaper. I then sanded the top and bottom surfaces. The empty voids and cracks were then filled with turquoise epoxy. Afterwards the top was resanded before applying the final finish.
I chose to finish this piece with a generous coat of clear epoxy as I planned on using it for a side table for my morning coffee mug. The epoxy coating provides a hard protective surface.
