This uniquely shaped thick live-edge cross-sectional table has a beautiful ring structure and natural light tan color. The table was finished with tung oil and then with a satin polyurethane coat to provide a protective layer.
The Story of this project
After a business lunch engagement in the Clarksville section of Austin, I came across a crew cutting down a large old oak tree. I asked is they could cut me three cross sections from it to use for my projects. The cross sections were unique in shape and I thought would make an interesting side table when finished. I could see also that the ring structure was as distinctive and would add so much to the finished table.
I air-dried the wood for over twelve months before working on the project.
Where to Use
This accent table really stands out because of it’s beautiful shape and ring structure. Whether used as an accent table in an office, living room, or porch, it will provide a surface that can become a focal point of a room. At 30 x 24 inches in top surface area the table provides ample surface area for a potted plant, decor or simply a side table for drinks. The natural color of the wood goes well with almost any color of walls, chairs, sofas, rugs and wall decor.
The Process
The project started by removing all loose bark from the outer edge of the wood. I then planed both the top and bottom surfaces to even them out. I then carefully smoothed the live edge surface with sandpaper. I filled in the cracks and crevices with blue tinted epoxy.
I then sanded the wood to a fine finish in preparation for finishing. I chose to use a tung oil coat and let the oil soak into the wood and enhance its natural color. I choose to use two protective coats of satin polyurethane so that it could be used with coffee mugs, flower pots and other items that might spill. Finally, I applied a coat of wax and buffed it to a nice sheen.
