This thick live-edge cross-section accent table has a beautiful ring structure and natural light brown/tan color. The table was finished with clear epoxy to provide a strong protective layer.
The Story of this project
This accent table was the first cross-section piece that I had ever made. I found the inner ring structure very appealing and thought it would work well as a table to put between two light blue chairs in my living room. At almost 3 feet in diameter 3inches thick the table provides ample surface area for coffee mug, books, and even a plant. The natural color of the wood goes well with almost any color of walls, chairs, sofas, rugs and wall decor. The Turquoise epoxy enhancements provide an extra bit of ‘drama’ to the finished table.
The Process
The project started by removing all loose bark from the outer edge of the wood. I then carefully smoothed the live edge surface with sandpaper. I then sanded the top and bottom surfaces.
I then sealed the bottom and sides and poured turquoise tinted epoxy to fill all the cracks and crevices. I then sanded the wood to a fine finish in preparation for finishing. I chose to use a generous clear coat of epoxy so that it could be used with coffee mugs, flower pots and other items that might spill.
