This full-sized office desk features a plank of Pecky Cypress enhanced with turquoise epoxy sandwiched between two planks of Red Gum.
The Story of this project
During the first year of the pandemic, feeling the need to get out of the office (re: my home), I ventured out from Austin in the direction of Fredericksburg, TX. This drive takes you into the heart of the Texas wine country
Along the way, I came across a wood/mill store along the highway. Exploring their inventory of boards, I came across a long plank of Pecky Cypress. Having worked with this type of wood before, I knew that it lent itself to a Turquoise Epoxy enhancement. I choose two additional planks of Red Gum that could bracket the Cypress and create a unique and distinctive wide surface that could be used for a desk.
Where to Use
This desk makes a statement of both beauty and utility. As an office desk in an office at home or at work, it provides a surface that is not only distinctive, but also an inspiration every time you see it.
The Process
The project started by cutting all planks of wood to size. The surfaces were jointed, planned and sanded. The three planks were glued and joined together and then planed and sanded again. At this point, the middle Pecky Cypress board was sealed on the bottom side and Turquoise Epoxy poured to fill all the open pores. After curing, the excess epoxy was sanded off to yield a flat, smooth surface.
I choose to use two coats of Osmo Polyx Oil for the finish. A hard wax was then applied to the top surface and buffed to an even sheen.
